The Arsenault Family Foundation China (AFFC), part of the PAX sapiens family of foundations, supports efforts to prevent global conflict and instability through improved systems for dispute resolution, dialogue, and international cooperation. AFFC prioritizes constructive China-U.S. relations as a core strategy to reduce strategic risk and foster shared solutions to urgent global challenges through direct programming and funding.
AFFC Focus Areas
- Facilitate Track Il diplomatic engagement by convening experts, promoting research and dialogue, and developing policies that strengthen China-U.S. relations and enhance mutual understanding
- Support bilateral cooperation on transnational challenges, including synthetic drug trafficking
- Advance pandemic prevention through promoting U.S.-China exchange and collaboration in health security
- Promote global women’s leadership in peace and security by strengthening networks, amplifying voices, and enabling more inclusive policy-making for lasting peace
Why U.S.-China?
As two of the world’s largest economies both deeply engaged in the international system, the U.S. and China have enormous influence on the globe. In many ways, their relationship sets the course for the 21st century.
A peaceful joint relationship between the two countries leads to a pathway to solving many global problems. On the other hand, an increasingly contentious future would disrupt global stability and potentially cause a new Cold War or even catastrophic military conflicts. PAX sapiens believes that this represents a risk of a preventable global catastrophe.
Experts agree that the U.S. and China have common interests on a range of non-traditional security issues, such as combating climate change, supporting global non-proliferation, reintegrating in Global Trade and Investment, and preventing pandemics.
PAX sapiens works through research and convenings to understand and identify what options exist for positive cooperation in areas of mutual interest for China and the U.S.
